Dr. Carolyn M. West is an award-winning psychologist and professor who writes, trains, consults, and lectures on intimate partner violence and sexual assault, with a special focus on African American women.

 

Mission Statement

Dr. West is deeply devoted to creating inspirational material to empower domestic violence/sexual assault survivors during their healing journey, delivering keynote addresses, conducting workshops, and customizing innovative training material to educate and equip professionals with the skills to provide culturally sensitive services.

 

Vision

To educate, empower, and inspire a multicultural alliance of survivors and professionals to prevent all forms of violence and help survivors heal themselves.

 

As an energetic, entertaining speaker Dr. West:

  • Is a survivor and a former student activist with a compelling story of overcoming sexual harassment. She successfully filed a lawsuit and won! Read her story.

 

  • Has lectured internationally and conducted workshops/presented papers at more than 100 conferences.

 

  • Has given television, radio, newspaper, and magazine interviews (Washington Post, National Public Radio) 

 

As an award-winning scholar, Dr. West has:

  • Authored more than 40 academic journal articles and book chapters.

 

  • Edited Violence in the lives of Black women: Battered, black, and blue (winner of the 2004 American Psychological Association's Carolyn Payton Early Career Award).

 

As a well-respected consultant and trainer, Dr. West has:

  • Developed culturally sensitive training material for various organizations.

 

  • Testified at Congressional Briefings in Washington, DC.

 

Dr. West is an aspiring cowgirl. She also enjoys community theater and self-defense training. Occasionally, she jumps out of a perfectly good airplane.
